SUBMISSION GUIDLINES

What we’re looking for:

Reviews: Book, film, music, art and exhibition reviews of works engaging with Surrealism and the Avant-Garde. Whether it be new or old work, we’re interested in a range of modes and mediums which explore themes concerned with the literary and artistic movement of Surrealism. These include, but are not limited to: the unconscious mind, dreams, human experience in conjunction with automation, the Strange, symbols, sexuality, identity, distortions and transformations. We’re after new garde takes on Surrealist topics and re-framed examinations of offerings of the past.

Essays: Creative and critical essays which explore and interrogate the Surreal. It could be an analytical re-imagening of the rebellious anti-Nazi tracts written by Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, a critical re-examining of the role of male artists in the beginning of the Surrealist movement, or a creatively-imagined manifesto of contemporary Avant-Gardism. What is most important to us is voice. We want a personal response to a question we never even thought to ask. We want a strong narratorial voice to guide us through a well-written and thoughtfully crafted response. It doesn’t have to be an academic thesis, but it does have to show strong research and your argument must hold up under the scrutiny of the Psychic Sibyl’s omniscient eye!

Original Works: This is where you can surprise us. We want to see your collages, CUT-UPs, diary entries, short films, poetic laments, snarky asides and romantic confessions, whatever form they take.

Formatting:

Boring! Yes, it is boring, we agree. But alas, it must be said that we much prefer a PDF to a Word Doc. Font size no bigger than 12 pt (unless stylised as such for artistic purposes), and the font choice is up to you! Just be aware that we will assign you a moral alignment based on your font choice. So, choose wisely.
